Metal Injection Molding
Metal Injection Molding (MIM) is very similar to plastic molding, but uses metal powders rather than thermoplastic material. Metal powder is molded using an injection molding machine. The part is removed from the injection molding press and is sintered while maintaining its shape.
Sintering provides the capability to mass produce complex parts at a high rate. In press and sintering, a metal powder fills a die cavity which has punches. The punches compress the powder in the die and give detail to the part. These components are then sintered for strength.
MIM parts are high in density, have high quality surface finishes, and can be made into highly complex dimensional parts.
